Sandra Cuevas, former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, shared details of her alleged ties to the La Unión Tepito Cartel, one of the most feared criminal groups in Mexico City due to their involvement in massacres and extortions. Cuevas has been pointed out for her possible connections to criminal organizations, rumors that have intensified due to her ostentatious lifestyle after leaving office.
In an interview with journalist Antonio Nieto, Sandra Cuevas addressed the question of whether she had reached an agreement with La Unión Tepito to maintain calm in her area. The former mayor stated that her presence in various points of the Cuauhtémoc borough, where problems occurred, was enough to keep criminal groups at bay, without the need to negotiate with them.
"Sandra Cuevas spoke in an interview with Antonio Nieto and stated: 'They (La Unión Tepito) know that if an authority is present at the scene of events, during the 'bomberazos', there will be problems; I felt safe, and I definitely did not negotiate with any criminal.'"
During her tenure, Sandra Cuevas revealed that she received numerous threatening phone calls due to her firm stance of not negotiating with crime. Despite reporting on certain occasions, Cuevas emphasized that she is not someone who complains constantly nor does she like to play the martyr role. "Sandra Cuevas showed bravery when she declared: 'I received many threatening calls; on some occasions, I reported them, but I'm not one to complain and I don't like to play the martyr. Sandra Cuevas has a lot of courage—it's better for them to cry in my house than for them to cry in yours, well...'
